Vietnam legislature should issue resolution against China’s illegal acts in East Sea: lawmaker

The Vietnamese government should report to the National Assembly about China’s illegitimate activities in the East Vietnam Sea and the law-making body should issue a resolution against them, a legislator has proposed.
Many cranes of Chinese construction units are seen illegally operating on Hughes Reef, part of Vietnam's Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago in the East Vietnam Sea.

The Vietnamese government should report to the National Assembly about China’s illegitimate activities in the East Vietnam Sea and the law-making body should issue a resolution against them, a legislator has proposed.
Nguyen Anh Son, deputy head of the delegation of lawmakers from the northern province of Nam Dinh, made the proposal at a preparatory meeting held ahead of the 9th session of the 13th National Assembly that opened in Hanoi on Wednesday.
Son wanted the legislature’s agenda to include a report by the government on Beijing’s land reclamation work and building of artificial islands in Vietnam’s Hoang Sa (Paracel) and Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelagoes in the East Vietnam Sea, despite strong protests from Hanoi as well as the international community.
In talking with Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper about this issue, Son said, “I made the proposal as China’s current illegal actions in Truong Sa are more dangerous than its illegal deployment of the Haiyang Shiyou 981 oil rig to Vietnamese waters last year.”
The latest information he had heard about such Chinese actions is the fact that Beijing is building a nine-story building on Huy Go (Hughes) Reef, one of Truong Sa’s areas that it has occupied since 1988, as recently reported by Tuoi Tre, Son said.
“Millions of Vietnamese feel indignant toward such a perverse action, so why don’t we raise our voice against it?” Son said.
Beijing has defied international law, disregarded its neighboring countries, and ignored the agreements made between Vietnam and China, the deputy commented.
Given China’s actions, the government and National Assembly should show people their counter-policies to China, Son requested.
“People across the country are getting upset about China’s actions, so the National Assembly, which represents the people’s will and aspirations, cannot but make a response.”
The law-making body should issue a resolution or adopt a strong move to oppose China’s law violations, Son said.
National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung agreed to Son’s proposition, saying that the legislature will arrange a meeting within the session for the government to report this issue to deputies.
Speaking to Tuoi Tre yesterday, many other lawmakers also said they agreed with the proposal.
“People are very upset by Beijing’s perverse actions in the East Vietnam Sea. The Party, State, and Government should express a decisive political view on this issue, and should send a diplomatic note to China’s leaders to protest their wrongful actions in Truong Sa and Hoang Sa,” said Nguyen Tan Tuan, standing deputy secretary of the Party Committee of the south-central province of Khanh Hoa.
Truong Sa is a district which belongs to Khanh Hoa, while Hoang Sa is a district administered by the central city of Da Nang.
In a related development, President Truong Tan Sang told people in District 4, Ho Chi Minh City at a meeting on May 17 that “the fatherland’s sovereignty must absolutely be protected without any concession.”
The leader made the statement after hearing members of the public express great concern over the tense situation in the East Vietnam Sea.
